South Delhi

South Delhi is divided into three sub-divisions, Defence Colony, Hauz Khas and Kalkaji. South Delhi is historic importance and is built around the ancient cities of Siri, Tughlaqabad, Mehrauli and Jahanpanah. Mehrauli is one of the seven ancient cities of Delhi.

Brief History of South Delhi

The Lal Kot Fort was constructed by the Tomara Chief Anangpal I around AD 731. The Tomara were defeated by the Prithviraj Chauhan in the 12th century further expanded the fort and called it Qila Rai Pithora. Mohammed Ghori defeated Chauhan in 1192 and put his general Qutbuddin Aybak in charge before returning to Afghanistan. Qutbuddin Aybak built the city further and named Mehrauli which remained the capital until 1290. During the Khilji dynasty, the capital shifted to Siri which was the second of the seven cities built by Allauddin Khilji in 1303 AD, Tughlaqabad which was built by Sultan Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, the founder of the Tughlaq dynasty in the 14th Century AD, and ‘Jahan Panah’, an ancient medieval city and also a fort was built by Sultan Muhammad Bin Tughlaq in 1327 AD, neither the city or the fort survived. Hence South Delhi could notice a composition of ancient and modern structures which attracts many tourists.

South Delhi has many historical monuments like Qutub Minar, remains of Hauz Khas Complex, Old Fort or Purana Qila, Humayun’s Tomb and other attractions Chattarpur Mandir, Lotus Temple, Lodi Garden, Deer Park and Kalindi Kunj.

Important Areas in South Delhi

Important areas are Munirka, Greater Kailash, New Friends Colony, Defence Colony, Lajpat nagar, Nehru Place South Extension, Vasant Kunj, Chittaranjan Park, and Safdarjung. Nehru Place is the largest business, commercial and financial centers of South Delhi. It is also considered as the largest market in Asia for computer and its accessories. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) the country’s ranked No.1 institute in the field of medicine and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi India's premier institute in Technology is located in South Delhi.
