National Museum of India New Delhi

National Museum of India in New Delhi is considered to be the standing example for the splendor of Indian History, Culture and Heritage. Delhi Museum is one of the largest museums in India located in Janpath and gives its visitors the real glimpse of the deep culture, tradition, heritage, and richness of India. The museum depicts the real transition of the ancient period to the present with the civilizations that speak the true History of India.

Rare Collections of National Museum in Delhi

There are very rare collection of murals, paintings, manuscripts, jewelers and sculptures which gives us the real glimpse of the tradition and rich cultural heritage that India poses to the world. There are copper and bronze statues, terracotta sculptures, rare coins, different types of weapons used by the Mauryan Dynasty, and rare potteries which gives an insight into the way of life. There are some real treasures such as manuscripts in the handwriting of Babar, the powerful Mughal Emperor, and also the personal diary of Jahangir. Delhi National Museum has some different collections of tribal group which has always been a definite part of Indian culture. The collections include the costumes and weapons used by the tribal group which gives us a look into the different face of life.

Indus Valley Civilization Section

The National Museum in Delhi has a different section dedicated to the Indus Valley Civilization. There are very rare things exhibited in this section which have been taken from Harappa and Mohan-Jodaro. There are many sculptures excavated from there which includes a very rare piece of a Dancing Girl which is worth watching. Though there are many exhibits taken from the civilization period, it can be seen that the museum is not restricted to the ancient period only.

Murals From Mughal period

There are also rare murals of Mughal period, Arabic paintings, and also the instruments invented by the famous musician Amir Khusro. It also possesses Sir Aurel Stein’s rare collection. They have also started a new jewelry collection section in the museum. Exhibitions are done on different themes regularly and a daily film show is organized in the auditorium of the museum.

Delhi National Museum History

The National Museum had its significance back in the period of 1947 - 1948. Though formally inaugurated by the then Governor General, Rajagopalachari, Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru wanted a separate building for the museum and so the cornerstone for the new museum was laid by him. But unfortunately he passed away before it was opened to the public in 1965.

The National Museum in Delhi is open on every day from morning 10 AM to 5 PM, except Mondays.
